The Peacock Gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda) is a vibrant freshwater fish species that has gained popularity among aquarium enthusiasts. Native to Papua New Guinea, these small and colorful fish are known for their striking appearance and relatively peaceful nature.

Measuring only about 2 inches in length, the Peacock Gudgeon exhibits a kaleidoscope of colors, with males displaying vibrant hues of blue, orange, and yellow. The distinctive eye-catching patterns on their tails resemble the beautiful plumage of a peacock, hence the name. This makes them a sought-after choice for aquariums, adding a burst of color and elegance to the aquatic environment.

Despite their small size, Peacock Gudgeons are known for their lively behavior and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. Providing them with a well-planted aquarium mimicking their natural habitat, along with peaceful tank mates, enhances their well-being. These fish prefer slow-flowing water and a temperature range of 75-79°F (24-26°C).

Breeding Peacock Gudgeons in captivity is challenging but rewarding. They are cave spawners, and creating suitable hiding spots with caves or coconut shells encourages successful breeding. With proper care and attention, the Peacock Gudgeon proves to be a delightful addition to any freshwater aquarium, captivating hobbyists with its stunning colors and fascinating behavior.

Here are the recommended water parameters for Peacock Gudgeons:

  • Temperature: Keep the water temperature between 75-79°F (24-26°C). This range replicates the warm tropical conditions of their native Papua New Guinea.

  • pH Level: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH range, ideally between 6.0 and 7.5. These fish prefer water that is not too alkaline.

  • Hardness: The water hardness, measured in dGH, should be relatively soft to moderately hard, ranging from 5 to 15 dGH. Peacock Gudgeons are not well-suited to very hard water.

  • Ammonia and Nitrite Levels: Keep ammonia and nitrite levels at zero. Regular water testing is crucial to ensure a healthy environment for these fish. Adequate filtration and regular water changes help maintain water quality.

  • Tank Setup: Provide a well-planted aquarium with hiding spots such as caves or coconut shells. Peacock Gudgeons appreciate a setup that mimics their natural habitat, which includes slow-flowing water and plenty of vegetation.
