The Pygmy Corydora, scientifically known as Corydoras pygmaeus, is a charming and diminutive species of freshwater catfish. Native to the slow-moving streams and rivers of South America, these tiny aquatic wonders have become popular among aquarium enthusiasts. With their vibrant colors and playful behavior, Pygmy Corydoras add an endearing touch to any aquarium. They have an amicable disposition and thrive in peaceful community tanks. These miniature catfish are well-suited for smaller aquariums, thanks to their small size, typically around 1 inch (2.5 cm). Their bottom-dwelling nature, shoaling behavior, and ease of care make Pygmy Corydoras a delightful addition to aquascapes of all sizes.

Maintaining appropriate water parameters is essential for the health and well-being of Pygmy Corydoras. These small catfish are relatively hardy, but it's crucial to replicate their natural habitat conditions for optimal care. Here are the recommended water parameters for Pygmy Corydoras:

  • Temperature: Keep the water temperature between 72-78°F (22-26°C). They prefer slightly warmer water compared to some other species of Corydoras.

  • pH Level: Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, ideally between 6.0 and 7.5. This range simulates the pH of their native waters.

  • Hardness: Pygmy Corydoras thrive in soft to moderately hard water. Aim for a dKH (carbonate hardness) of 2-8 and a dGH (general hardness) of 2-15.

  • Ammonia and Nitrites: Ensure that ammonia and nitrite levels remain at zero. These compounds are toxic to Pygmy Corydoras, as they are to all fish and aquatic organisms.

  • Nitrates: Keep nitrate levels below 20 ppm (parts per million) through regular water changes and efficient filtration.

  • Filtration: Use gentle filtration to avoid strong currents, as Pygmy Corydoras prefer calm, slow-moving waters.

  • Substrate: Provide a soft substrate, like sand, to mimic their natural habitat and allow them to forage comfortably.

  • Plants and Hiding Spots: Incorporate live plants and hiding spots, such as caves or driftwood, to create a natural environment and give the fish places to rest and explore.
