Kribensis, scientifically known as Pelvicachromis pulcher, is a popular species of freshwater cichlid native to West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon. These colorful fish are well-loved in the aquarium hobby due to their striking appearance and ease of care. Kribensis are small, typically growing to around 4 inches, and display vibrant hues of red, yellow, and blue, especially during breeding. They are hardy and adaptable to various water conditions, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Kribensis are also known for their peaceful temperament and fascinating parental care behaviors.
For keeping Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) healthy in an aquarium, it's important to maintain the right water parameters:
- Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Water Hardness: 5–15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm (as with all fish, ammonia and nitrite should be undetectable)
- Nitrate: Below 20 ppm is ideal for long-term health
Kribensis are fairly adaptable but thrive best in these conditions, which mimic their natural environment in slow-moving rivers and streams in West Africa.
